Huawei Technologies, one of China’s largest networking equipment manufacturer, has announced its plans to capture the Nigerian market by doubling its smartphone sales in Nigeria before year end.
According to its managing director Tony Liang, of the company’s consumer business group for west Africa.reveled that the company has plans to sell the world slimmest smart phone in Lagos the commercial capital of Africa’s biggest cellphone market, known as the Huawei Ascend P6 smartphone.
By flaging off the sell of the smartphones it hopes to sell 200 000 units in Nigeria as this will increase its presence in the Nigerian market and also help beat competition in the mobile phone market.
In Nigeria more than 90 percent of the phones used are only feature phones, mainly voice and text enabled, which leaves room for a rapid smartphone growth. He was also said “With Nigeria developing economically, smartphone use will boom over the next five years.”
According to Nigerian Communications Commission, Nigeria has a cellular subscribers base of 117 million, for a population of more than 170 million. Where an average subscribers has more than one line, the numbers will grow to more than 200 million subscriptions in 2017, London-based research company Informa Telecoms & Media estimates.
According to Yolanda Zhang, the marketing director of the consumer business in west Africa, Huawei been a late arrival into the Nigerian smartphone market, it had the advantage of being a network provider to most cellular operators, said Yolanda Zhang, the marketing director of the consumer business in west Africa.
Huawei has very few competitors in the Nigeria market which include Apple, HTC, Nokia ,Tecno Telecom, Samsung Electronics and BlackBerry.
Most of the Telecommunication carriers in the country also offer subsidised or free smartphones and data plans which include MTN Nigerian, Globacom, Bharti Airtel and Etisalat.
